Mid Dorset Mencap Group
Charity Shop giving local people with learning difficulties/special needs oppertunities to learn skills. Open Monday,Tuesday & Wednesday 10.30am to 3.30pm,
Typically, Mid Dorset Mencap will support grant applications that help people with learning disabilities and special needs to live independently and/or provide opportunities for leisure/recreation activities and occupation that would not be available otherwise.
Our long term aim is to provide a centrally situated community/resource ‘drop-in’ centre where people with learning disabilities can meet informally to enjoy activities of everyday life, education and training, leisure and recreation and develop occupational skills. This would fulfil a huge unmet need in the area.
In the past years we have raised money to: support a not-for-profit café in Poundbury Dorchester, which is run by people with learning disabilities; purchase a special bed for a needy family; help furnish a flat for a young lady to live independently fund educational, sporting and other opportunities for residents at a residential home for adults with learning disabilities; fund an educational trip to Normandy for young people with special needs. Fund the purchase of a cycle for a person with special needs. Support the Dorchester Museum who run a project that provide educational facilities on a weekly basis for local people with learning difficulties and special needs.
In order to fulfil our long term objective we need substantial funding to create the facility unfortunately to achieve this we need to make a daily/hourly charge to those who wish to use the facility (This is not uncommon as people who attend Dorset County Council Day Centres have to pay for this service), with the recent Government cuts to adult services our clients in most cases find paying to attend causes financial hardship.
Mid Dorset Mencap Group are a small local group of unpaid volunteers who have a connections with people with learning difficulties and those with special needs, the group is affiliated to Royal National Mencap and is registered with the charity commission. We aim to improve the quality of life for local people with learning difficulties and those with Special Needs by raising funds to provide goods and services to support and benefit them, provide rest bite for their families and carers, over and above those provided by statutory authorities.
